3 to 5 years
Pre-schoolers who spend more time playing with their dads are often more sociable when entering primary school.
Play and talk together
- Encourage your child to try new things, learn new skills, develop their own creativity and imagination.
- Play pretend games, sorting or memory games.
- Make stories up together.
- Let children be involved in small and safe tasks and give them praise.
- Listen to your child so they feel their opinion matters and they are a respected member of the family.
- Rough-and-tumble play can be fun and help children learn about managing emotions and understanding others’ emotions, but make sure you set ground rules, manage your emotions and strength, and set out time to calm down after play and before moving on to a calmer activity.
